SPIRITUAL DIRECTION FAQ's

I am excited that you are interested in learning more about what Spiritual Direction is and how you might be able to be supported through it! Below is an overview and some specific details.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Christian Spiritual Direction was established by the desert fathers and mothers of the 3rd and 4th centuries. In the centuries following, spiritual direction was offered as a form of confession and soul care to monks in monasteries and nuns and priests in the Catholic Church. Today, spiritual direction has blossomed throughout different faith traditions.

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

The spiritual director offers compassionate listening, encouragement, and open-ended questions with love and empathy to help people explore their relationship with God. Ironically, spiritual direction is not directive. Instead, it’s collaborative and prayerful.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPIRITUAL DIRECTION & OTHER RELATIONSHIPS

Spiritual direction differs from Christian discipleship, counseling, and coaching. Although it may share similarities with each, it stands apart as a distinct practice.

  • Discipleship usually follows curriculum or lessons aimed at helping people to become more Christlike. In contrast, spiritual direction is not based on a set curriculum; instead, it adapts to the unique spiritual journey of the individual seeking to experience God's presence and guidance.

  • Counseling generally focuses on mental health challenges, behavioral patterns, and/or relationship issues. Although these topics are welcomed in spiritual direction, the focus tends to be more on exploring the spiritual dimensions and growth opportunities connected to one's life experiences.

  • Coaching is generally centered on helping individuals clarify and achieve personal or professional goals. Spiritual direction differs in that it is not guided by an agenda but guided more by the person’s desires and Christ’s Spirit.

WHAT DOES A SESSION LOOK LIKE?

A spiritual direction session might begin with a short conversation, a prayer, or a moment of quiet. Throughout most of the time, the directee shares about what they are noticing in their life while the director listens and asks reflective questions to deepen awareness and understanding. Toward the end, the director may suggest spiritual practices or resources for the directee to explore further.

For some it is a lifetime, perhaps on a once-a-month rhythm. For others, it might be more often but for a shorter amount of time or on an as needed basis. It is dependent on what the directee's desires are.
